Nine teenagers have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina, on June 24 after a dispute “over a girl,” authorities said this week.
Florence County deputies were called to First Neck Road on the afternoon of June 24, where Wright had been shot several times and later died from his injuries, according to officials.
The shooting occurred along a rural stretch of the county road, about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach, officials say. Wright and his alleged shooter had been in an argument that police say grew intense and ended when the other teen pulled out a gun, according to an arrest warrant. The shooting was allegedly partly recorded on video by another person at the scene.
Investigators say the other teens played a role in orchestrating the fatal shooting. Among the new arrests announced this week were several teens who helped lure Wright to the location where his accused killer, 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, was waiting for him, officials said.
The incident has left a family reeling and searching for answers as to how their 16-year-old son and brother was killed, his mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital.
“All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
Five teens charged as adults in teen’s killing
South Carolina law enforcement agencies can charge teens as adults in serious crimes, including murder. Prosecutors confirmed that five of the nine arrestees are being charged as adults, and a sixth is a juvenile who has been turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Deputies arrested Raper, who is also 19, the day after the shooting, after allegedly pulling up to Wright after the fight had been ongoing between the teens, and he “presented his firearm” to the 16-year-old, according to the arrest warrant. Raper then began shooting Wright, and the two were arguing about some of the shots Wright took before Raper fled, the warrant says.
Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that other teens were present for the shooting and had planned it with Raper. “They were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” Nunn told WBTW-TV. “They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.”
Nunn confirmed that several teens are now being tried as adults for their alleged roles in the crime. “The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” he added.
In addition to Raper, three Myrtle Beach-area teens have been charged with murder over the killing of Wright. They were identified as 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns.
The suspects were already being held on other charges by deputies, but at the time, they had been released on bond. Kendall and Belviso had posted $10,000 bonds while Kearns had posted $5,000, officials said.
Sheriff T.J. Joye said the two teens had been in a personal feud with Wright over a romantic interest, and that’s why they shot and killed him. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” he told reporters. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Three other teens have since been arrested in the case, including Wright’s girlfriend. Details of what charges they face and their exact involvement in the shooting have not been released by the sheriff’s office as the investigation is ongoing. A request for comment from the Florence County state attorney’s office was not returned by the deadline.
A mother’s anguish over her teen son’s death
Wright’s mother said the time between her son’s death and now has been full of agonizing moments as she has to go to court and try to move past what happened to her son.
“Thank you for inquiring about Trey,” Wright’s mother wrote on Facebook, where she has been posting about the case in recent days. “I’ve been very private with everything, so this is new to me, but I appreciate it. All I can say at this moment is I miss my son so much!”
Her son had a girlfriend as well as a group of friends whom she is still getting used to being without, she said.
“I thank God he left me his friends,” she wrote. “I’m just so heartbroken, angry, and sad.”
Court documents released by police describe how, in the days and hours leading up to the shooting, Raper and the group of teens at the scene were all at a gathering. The group began to argue, and police say at least one other individual present recorded the dispute on a cellphone.
At one point, Raper and the group of teens, including the girl at the scene, left the group and drove around in another car, according to the arrest warrant. At one point, the group of teens got out of the car to try to get back to the first location, but the two cars collided, briefly pulling one of the teens from her vehicle.
During the conversation, it is alleged, at least one of the teens was recording the incident, and a line of the recording can be heard as officers recount the events in the arrest warrant. According to a recording, Raper also told some of the teens, including Wright, that he would bring a gun to get back at him, and one of them said they had just been trying to play around.
