Final John Wick Spin-Off Trailer Showcases Ana de Armas’ Fury

Ballerna, the John Wick spin-off film led by Ana de Armas, is just three weeks away from theaters, and the latest marketing campaign for the film is now firing on all cylinders. If you’ve been waiting for a final trailer that gives you a sense of what to expect, Lionsgate just dropped it, and it’s everything we were hoping for. Stylish, brash, and more than a little action-packed, John Wick: Ballerina is going to deliver with style.

Set during the events of 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Ballerina will follow a young assassin (Ana de Armas) as she seeks vengeance for the murder of her father. The Ballerina of the film’s title refers not only to her mastery of the Russian folk dance discipline as a child, but also her expertise as a deadly ballerina-assassin.

The Ballerina of Ballerina was last seen in Parabellum in a short scene in which a group of young girls is practicing on the stage of a large theater. In the new film, that character will be played by Ana de Armas, and the story will pick up on the mystery introduced in the John Wick sequel. For fans of the franchise, there will be other faces to welcome back to the universe. Many of the characters you will know from the first three films, such as John Wick (Keanu Reeves) himself and Winston (Ian McShane), will make appearances in Ballerina.

As far as the villain of the film goes, you’ll be seeing Gabriel Byrne as the Chancellor, as well as Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Nogi and Norman Reedus as Daniel Pine. The cast also includes both Catalina Sandino Moreno and David Castañeda, although their roles are still not being discussed. Finally, you’ll also see Anjelica Huston return as the Director.

Fans of the John Wick films will have a chance to bid farewell to one last cast member in the film. Lance Reddick, who portrayed the character of Charon in the films, passed away in March of 2023, and this will be his last on-screen role in a film. The multi-million-dollar bounty on his head in Parabellum after killing Santino D’Antonio (played by Riccardo Scamarcio) in the Continental Hotel courtyard was one of the many key parts of that chapter in the John Wick saga.

After his bloody escape, Wick made his way across New York City, pursued by nearly every criminal in town, until he arrived at the headquarters of the Ruska Roma, a Serbian crime family. Led by the no-nonsense Director (played by Anjelica Huston), the Ruska Roma gave Wick sanctuary and a brief respite. But for those young ballerina recruits the Roma trained, the Director was more than a teacher. She was a mentor and their guide in the brutal world of assassin training.

The John Wick: Ballerina trailer takes a break from all of the character exposition that filled its predecessor and instead goes full throttle. It opens on an instantly iconic image: Ballerina protagonist Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) raising her head to peer up at John Wick while lying in his sights. An almost-symphonic swell in the music as he lines up the shot gives way to a manic, almost breathless race of flurries of attacks, foot chases, gunplay, and some truly remarkable stunt work and choreography.

Ana de Armas will be put to the test in the role, as the sequence suggests that she will be constantly battling her way through a series of foes and obstacles, just like Reeves did in the previous films. There’s an extra layer of intensity because, of course, the threat of John Wick himself is a constant pressure on the assassin’s back. De Armas proves she’s more than up to the task as she dispatches attackers in ways that only a master ballerina-assassin could.

Every bit as operatic as its predecessor, the second trailer for John Wick: Ballerina is equally evocative and powerful in its own right. The John Wick saga is a deadly ballet, and the latest film has all the ingredients to be just as balletic as its cinematic predecessors.
