Apple TV+ teases game-changing third season of Invasion

The chances are pretty good that you haven’t been paying much attention to Invasion, one of Apple TV+’s big bets in sci-fi that has been a bit overshadowed by the streaming service’s two other sci-fi giants, Silo and Foundation. Even those who have been watching have sometimes been somewhat reluctant in their support. A labor of love, to be sure, for the creators and many of the viewers who have watched and ranted and raved online about the show, but that’s still translated to mixed reviews (and more so, early on), in part because the first season is set up as such a slow-burn.

On top of that, even Invasion’s biggest fans have sometimes felt like they have a love/hate relationship with the show.

But for all the issues, growing pains, and general confusion about what the show might want to be, it has also had some undeniable highlights. It’s been beautifully shot and photographed since the beginning, and it’s been creatively ambitious, if uneven in its execution. There’s been an effort to say something meaningful or even bold or shocking in its themes. The early criticism of the show as slow and overstuffed with dense storytelling was, in many ways, absolutely warranted. But the creators have also made an effort to find a unique voice, or at least a consistent perspective to set the story apart.

Now, the creators, producers, and streamers are giving fans another chance with the third and final season of Invasion. And based on the new trailer, it looks like the show is ready to lean into the action and higher stakes it needs from the jump. Will it be too little, too late to win over skeptics? Time will tell. But at the very least, the creative team has now had time to hit its stride, and it seems like it has.

Invasion was created by David Weil (who previously created Hunters) and produced by Simon Kinberg, who’s produced and directed several X-Men movies and was an Oscar-nominated producer/writer of the Matt Damon vehicle The Martian. The hook of Invasion has always been a strong one, a unique take on the tried-and-true alien invasion story by telling the story through the eyes of ordinary people from different parts of the world. Showrunners Weil and Kinberg have cast an international group of actors and made a point of including English, Japanese, and Pashto in the dialogue, bringing some diverse voices to a broad story.

The first season really was about Invasion in its early stages, before the full scope of the alien threat was as clear. In many ways, the titular invaders were a secondary concern. Viewers who were more in it for the action and the big-budget sci-fi spectacle were a little let down by what often seemed like more of an emphasis on interpersonal and emotional drama between characters.

The first season ended with all of that building to a climax: the full invasion was now impossible to ignore, and everyone would be caught up in it. The second season went for broke in comparison to the first. It picked up the pacing, leaned more into action sequences, and raised the stakes of the situation. It was a shift that worked in the show’s favor: a second season that set up a new, altered world to be explored after the incursion had taken place in full. The idea was that humanity had been pushed into small, isolated safe zones, and many of the characters who had survived up to that point would now have to face this new reality.

Humans who were forced to adapt in impossible ways, who often had to make unthinkable choices to survive. The pacing in the second season was still far from breakneck, but it was a welcome shift, and it set up a dramatic pivot for Season 3.

Season 3 of Invasion Will Bring Together Characters for a Single Mission

Season 3 picks up two years later, and the new trailer emphasizes that the threat has also evolved, terrifyingly so. The premise of the upcoming season, according to the press release, the “disparate perspectives” of the various characters at the center of the story will collide for the first time in Season 3, as “Mitsuko (Shioli Kutsuna), Aneesha (Golshifteh Farahani), Trevante (Shamier Anderson), Jamila (India Brown), Clark (Enver Gjokaj) and Nikolai (Shane Zaza) unite for a high-stakes mission” against the aliens.

They will come together to infiltrate the alien mothership, the first time in the show’s history that these major characters will be under one roof, so to speak, and the narrative unification of the many, diverse, and international locations the show has followed from the beginning. The trailer shows clips of the major players from the previous two seasons coming together as one crew for this new, definitive mission. The first season was about the early days of the invasion, while the second season brought the action and intensity, and it seems like Season 3 has found a way to combine those narrative arcs with a new goal: they will have to work together.

The stakes have also been raised, it seems. The creatures themselves have evolved, according to the press release, and are in their “apex” form: tendrils extend outward from the ship and across the world, and humans must do whatever they can to survive this new development in the alien threat. It will take every last person they’ve followed over the last couple of seasons to finally combat the alien invasion in a big way.

The third season of Invasion will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025.
