Trump: Diddy’s Politics Changed Our Friendship
Donald Trump could be seen talking about the issue of potentially pardoning Sean “Diddy” Combs recently. While participating in a Newsmax program entitled Finnerty on Friday on August 1, the former commander-in-chief was questioned regarding his possible decision to grant a presidential pardon to Combs in case he is convicted after his July trial.
On July 12, Sean “Diddy” Combs, a founder of Bad Boy Records, was found guilty on a single federal charge of transportation in connection with the intent to engage in prostitution. Although he was cleared of the more severe allegations, such as sex trafficking and racketeering, the trial itself had been going on for more than seven weeks and was full of testimony and controversy.
It included accusations against Combs made by singer Cassie Ventura, who claimed that the hip-hop mogul abused and trafficked her when they were in a relationship in the past. While Combs was adamant in his denial of the allegations and continued to proclaim his innocence, he was eventually found guilty of a minor charge related to the case.
When asked about the pardon, Trump was as equivocal as he was before, but in a different manner. “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,” he told Finnerty, confusing the matter and showing the host that he knows him. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”
Besides, he also discussed their relationship with Combs. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” Trump said, pointing out that the two of them were at least friends. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
The Evolution of a Legal Battle and Political Undertones
Trump had previously been asked about the likelihood of a pardon being given to Sean “Diddy” Combs before he gave the recent interview for Newsmax. In May, the former president was also questioned about the issue, this time during a press briefing in the Oval Office. Responding to Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy, Trump used a very similar rhetoric to the one he had employed on August 1.
In May, he also said that he will “look at the facts” to later decide on the issue of a pardon. However, before doing so, Trump quickly made it clear that he would not be basing his choice on the former rapper’s current or past personal preferences.
“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump told Doocy back then. But after such a refutation, he still insisted that no matter what their past relationship used to be like, he would not be making the decision on the merit of feelings, whether positive or negative. “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
As for Sean “Diddy” Combs, his legal battles are far from over. In July, he was found guilty of a federal crime as a result of a grand jury investigation, which eventually led to his conviction in court. Although he was acquitted of the most serious charges brought against him, including sex trafficking and racketeering, the remaining federal accusation may still cause trouble for Combs.
As a result of his conviction, he now faces up to two decades behind bars, for which his sentencing is scheduled to take place on October 3.
As with any high-profile case, this one has also been the subject of a number of different controversies. In addition to discussions about how justice works for celebrities, there has been another debate over Trump’s powers as a president and how his relationship with Sean “Diddy” Combs, both present and past, would affect his final decision.
However, after his recent public comments, it seems as if Trump is willing to look into the matter and examine it. “He was celebrating a victory,” Trump said during the Newsmax interview. “But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”
A clip of Trump’s full comments from the segment with Finnerty has been uploaded to X (formerly Twitter). In it, he continued to elaborate on the same topic and address the question of the possibility of Combs receiving a pardon.
Political commentators, hip-hop music fans, and legal scholars have all been reacting to Trump’s statement regarding the potential for pardoning Sean “Diddy” Combs. However, for now, it is still unclear whether the former president will follow through on the statement that he would be willing to consider such a decision.
It will not be known until October, when Combs is set to be sentenced, whether Trump’s public words were just to stir controversy and speculation, or if he will indeed use his executive power to intervene in the sentencing of a friend of his.
