ZR1X Hybrid Corvette to Challenge Ferrari and Porsche

Surprising even long-time Corvette enthusiasts, Chevrolet unveiled a preview of what might be its most extreme performance vehicle to date: the ZR1X. Debuted alongside the already potent ZR1, this new hybrid variant represents the most dramatic change of the Corvette platform yet.

With innovative technology and raw American horsepower, the ZR1X looks to upend the hypercar scene.

High Tech Approaches High Speed in the ZR1X

Pushing out 1,064 hp, the same twin-turbocharged V8 found in the ZR1 drives the ZR1X. That would be amazing by itself. Still, Chevrolet was not happy. They included a front-mounted electric motor to produce an all-wheel-drive hybrid system with overall 1,250 hp (919 kW).

A 1.9 kWh battery, upgraded to hold 26% more charge than what the E-Ray provides powers the electric motor. The ZR1X explosive acceleration results from that increase bringing the output of the front motor to 186 hp and 145 lb-ft. Chevy figures it can run from 0 to 60 mph in less than two seconds.

GM fitted the car with 16.5-inch carbon-ceramic brake rotors and massive 10-piston calipers—the first of their kind in any GM product—to help control that power. With a breathtaking 1.9 Gs of braking force, testing at the Nürburgring found that the ZR1X could slow down from 180 mph to 120 mph.

Comparatively to 150 mph in the E-Ray, the front axle disconnects of the ZR1X at 160 mph (257 km/h). With that record set using ballast weight to replicate the ZR1X’s final configuration, it still achieves the same 233 mph (375km/h) top speed as the ZR1. Chevrolet obviously designed this vehicle to rival the best performance machines available worldwide.

Still, the ZR1X is about more than just raw capability. Chevrolet gave the handling great thought. With reportedly 1 G of both lateral and longitudinal acceleration, the ZR1X has great track credibility. Early hybrids such as the E-Ray had erratic front-axle behavior under load. The ZR1X solves that.

Chief Engineer Josh Holder reported on past problems including tire deformation under load causing erroneous sensor data. To guarantee the ZR1X could consistently and under control handle extreme driving, the software needed a complete overhaul.

While a new Push to Pass button gives drivers a brief surge of all 1,250 horsepower, new drive modes including Endurance and Qualifying make the ZR1X ready for the racetrack. To improve driver feedback and stability, the hybrid system also employs front-axle regenerative braking coupled with the rear friction brakes.

Naturally, the hybrid parts weigh more. For convertible models, Chevrolet approximates the ZR1X will weigh roughly 500 pounds more than the Z51 Stingray, bringing its weight almost 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg). Still, AWD traction and electric torque combine to overcome that bulk on both street and racetrack.

Chevy has not stated the range of the ZR1X in electric-only mode, but the 3 to 5 miles (5–8km) of the E-Ray probably set the benchmark. This is designed to rule, not to be a hybrid for range.

Pricing specifics are still under wraps, but given the MSRP of $174,995 the ZR1X could provide multi-million dollar performance for a far lower cost.

The ZR1X marks not only a continuation of the Corvette narrative but also a launch expected in 2025, maybe the most exciting chapter yet.
